Hello! I am a proud member of Bowdoin's fabulous English department, where I teach and study English Renaissance literature, with a special focus on Shakespeare. My research focuses on the twin influences of early modern science and religion as they shaped forms of representation. I recently completed a monograph entitled Shakespeare and the Mirror of Nature: Protestantism, Natural Philosophy, and the Orders of Representation in Early Modern Europe. I have also co-edited an anthology of essays entitled Rethinking Science and Religion in Early Modern England. My new research addresses the emergence of new racial categories in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, focusing on the application of "race" as a category to animals in works of zoology, natural history, and venery (i.e., hunting manuals). I teach classes on Shakespeare and other Renaissance dramatists, as well as courses on poetry, theories of embodiment, literary and cultural theory, and the art and power of conversation. Please email me or stop by my office in Mass Hall anytime to introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting you!
